Senior Research Scientist / Platform Innovation

Barcelona, Spain| Full-Time / On-Site| earliest September 2026

Who We Are

ALLOX is a spin-off of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) and draws on the expertise and technology developed in the lab of Ben Lehner. The company was born out of the realisation that combining systematic mutagenesis, high-throughput phenotyping and biophysical modelling has the potential to revolutionise drug development but also transform biotechnology in general. We are located in an incubation space, including a recently expanded laboratory, in the Barcelona Science Park (surrounded by 6 research institutes and over 70 different companies), and our immediate goal is to identify allosteric switches in all proteins and then leverage this unprecedented resource to rapidly develop novel medicines to treat human diseases. Our long-term vision is to become a leader in programmable biology, building the next generation of tools to predict, design and engineer new protein functions. We believe in a future where humanity will be able to harness the power of biology to solve our most pressing issues. We are expanding our interdisciplinary team with highly motivated individuals who are excited by this bold vision, share our sense of urgency, but are not willing to compromise on integrity. At ALLOX the success of our revolutionary scientific approach is as important to us as our mission to create a healthy, honest and respectful culture, both internally and with our partners.

Who You Are

ALLOX is seeking a highly motivated and adaptable individual to join our dynamic team as a Senior Research Scientist. In this pivotal role, you will drive research and innovation to expand ALLOX’s functional hotspot mapping technology and drug discovery in three key ways: (1) expanding the capabilities of the ALLOX’s Platform with additional cellular/biophysical assays, (2) optimizing and automating current Platform activities to increase throughput, and (3) accelerating hit discovery, prioritisation and validation (peptide/small molecule screening). The ideal candidate will possess a hybrid skill set with extensive molecular and cell biology expertise, experience with high-throughput screening and multiplexed assays, and computational skills to analyse sequencing data, enabling them to spearhead the development of new experimental methodologies. Regular communication and collaboration with other wet lab staff, computational, and leadership teams will be crucial, making this position ideal for an organised thinker, multitasker, problem-solver, and proactive team player. If you share our sense of urgency to bring novel and better drugs to meet unmet needs and thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, don’t hesitate. Join ALLOX and help us make our mission a reality!

What You'll Do

Technology Innovation

  • Lead the development and validation of new selection assays for the ALLOX Platform, expanding its application range.
  • Design and develop novel strategies for high-throughput screening and sequencing.
  • Champion continuous improvement through innovative approaches to experimental design and data analysis for increased throughput and cost-effectiveness.
  • Contribute to the decision-making process of target selection and prioritisation within the hotspot mapping platform.
  • Develop computational tools/algorithms for library design and the analysis of screening results.
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies relevant to hit discovery and validation and explore their potential application.

Scientific Leadership

  • Lead high-quality research, set clear scientific goals, timelines, and performance metrics for ALLOX’s platform innovation projects.
  • Mentor team members, fostering their scientific development and ensuring a pleasant working environment.

Communication, Teamwork and Culture

  • Establish clear communication channels with the different working teams.
  • Keep stakeholders informed about workload, progress, results and innovations.
  • Exemplify best practices and contribute to a productive and inclusive working environment.

Job & Technical Competencies Requirements

Essential
  • PhD degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biological Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of full-time wet lab experience (industry or academia).
  • Extensive knowledge of Molecular, Cell and Microbial biology experimental techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with Deep Mutational Scanning (DMS) or similar high-throughput multiplexed assays of variant effects.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and optimising Cellular/Biophysical assays.
  • Ability to apply statistical analyses to biological data.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively across experimental and computational teams.
  • Adaptable, organised and able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, startup environment.
  • Fluent English.

Desirable
  • Experience in the Biotechnology industry.
  • Experience mentoring and guiding other scientists in industry or academia.
  • Knowledge of peptide/small molecule screening methods or proven track record in hit identification to initiate drug discovery programs.
  • Programming skills in Python/R for data analysis.
  • Experience with liquid handling, automation and robotics.
  • Familiarity with the Benchling laboratory information management system.
  • Fluent Spanish and/or Catalan.

Compensation & Benefits

To determine salary range, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate’s skills, education and experience, the level at which they are actually hired, market demand, business needs, and internal parity. We may also adjust this range in the future based on market data.

For the Senior Research Scientist, we offer a yearly base salary between €52,000 and €62,000 plus an Annual Performance Bonus plan based on individual and company goals and performance. This role is eligible for our meaningful early-stage equity package (subject to the terms of those plans and associated policies).

Beyond the numbers, here's what working at ALLOX looks like:
